Here is when it becomes easier to validate the behaviour of the code wrt the cmds
declaration I mentioned above. I read this and my first question was "how do we
know that cmds[1] is valid memory?" The nice thing about declaring it in the way I
suggest is that the compiler will enforce correctness for us.

Bit of a nit, but I think probe would be more readable if we moved the above
out to a helper function.
